Written
& Directed by KIM Min'Gi
Based on original play Volker Ludwig's <Die Moskitos sind da>
Music by Birger Heymann What if teenagers had the right
to vote? This is the premise of the Rock musical Moskito, an incisive
parody about the incoherent educational system, warped educational
fervor of Korean parents, and stifling
school life seen from the eyes of teens. With the intense and explosive
rock base, Moskito is a cross-mix
of various musical styles such as rap and dance, as well as various
dance styles such as break dance
and hip-hop. With the live performance of a five-member rock band
zapping life to the rock musical,
Moskito encompasses a range of cultural codes of today's youth,
such as the Internet broadcasting,
PC game rooms, Star Craft, and chatting.
Adapted from the German original Die Moskitos sind da by the Berlin-based
Grips Theater, Theater Hakchon
first staged the production in 1997, and updated and re-adapted
by Kim Min-ki to fit the Korean context in
1999 and 2000. In Korea, where performance art for youth is virtually
nil, Moskito has been critically
acclaimed for its originality and artistic craftsmanship.
